NEWROC Natural Resource Management

A United approach to Natural Resource management

The seven shires that comprise the North Eastern Wheatbelt Regional Organisation of Councils (NEWROC) have demonstrated a proactive and innovative approach to natural resource management and biodiversity protection by combining resources and pursuing collaborations with organisations that can contribute their expertise. A strategic plan for natural resource management has been developed that states as its vision for NEWROC: to be a progressive and vibrant region that protects and enhances natural resources for conservation, lifestyle and economic benefit. In recognition of the NEWROC efforts a wide variety of organisations (at a regional, State and national level) have shown their support by offering assistance to NEWROC to achieve their vision for the region. A formal partnership has been signed between NEWOC and the World Wide Fund for Nature, and co-operative projects are also being undertaken with the: Avon Catchment Council, CSIRO, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Conservation and Land Management, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Environs Australia, Rio Tinto, Sinclair Knight Merz, University of Western Australia – Centre for Water Research, and the WA Local Government Association. This project is leading the way in Western Australia to provide an avenue for the smaller rural Local Governments to tackle sustainability and environmental issues that, in the long term, will determine their futures.
